چکیده

The probability of schedule overruns for construction and engineering projects can be ascertained using a ‘best fit’ probability distribution from an empirical distribution. The statistical characteristics of schedule overruns occurring in 276 Australian construction and engineering projects were analysed. Skewness and kurtosis values revealed that schedule overruns are non-Gaussian. Theoretical probability distributions were then fitted to the schedule overrun data; including the Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Anderson–Darling and Chi-Squared non-parametric tests to determine the ‘Goodness of Fit’. A Four Parameter Burr probability function best described the behaviour of schedule overruns, provided the best overall distribution fit and was used to calculate the probability of a schedule overrun being experienced. The statistical characteristics of contract size and schedule overruns were also analysed, and the Wakeby (oAU$1m and AU$11–50m), Three Parameter Log-logistic (AU$1–A$10m) and Beta (AU$51–A$100m and 4AU$101m) models provided the best distribution fits and were used to calculate schedule overrun probabilities by contract size. Investigation of Significant Factors Influencing Time and Cost Overruns in Indian Construction Projects

Time overruns and Cost overruns has been a major issue in many Indian construction projects. The successful execution of construction projects and keeping them within prescribed schedule and cost is very important for effective time performance and cost performance. This research work is carried out on studying significant factors causing Time overruns and Cost overruns in Indian construction p...

Development of a Generic Risk Matrix to Manage Project Risks

A generic risk matrix is presented for use identifying and assessing project risks quickly and cost effectively. It assists project managers with few resources to perform project risk analysis. The generic risk matrix (GRM) contains a broad set of risks that are categorized and ranked according to their potential impact and probability of occurrence. The matrix assists PMs in quickly identifyin...

Risk Analysis for Design-Build Construction Projects: A Simplified Approach

Construction Projects are being implemented under different contract systems in the Midwest. Negotiated design-build has been a popular contract system in recent years. It provides various advantages through entailing the contractor to be responsible for the whole project. However, design-build turns out to be risky system for both owners and contractors unless the risks are identified, quantif...

Design of Work in Process Buffers in Repetitive Building Projects: a Case Study

Variability in construction projects usually leads to schedule delays, cost overruns and productivity losses. Among the different techniques and tools employed to manage a construction project the use of buffers is a common approach to handle variability and to protect production processes from its negative impact. Time float, resource inventories and budget contingencies are examples of buffer...

A Review of Surveys on Software Effort Estimation

This paper summarizes estimation knowledge through a review of surveys on software effort estimation. Main findings were that: (1) Most projects (60-80%) encounter effort and/or schedule overruns. The overruns, however, seem to be lower than the overruns reported by some consultancy companies. For example, Standish Group’s ‘Chaos Report’ describes an average cost overrun of 89%, which is much h...
